Fun Facts about Spring Flowers

This year, spring officially begins on March 19th, the vernal equinox, but flowers don’t have any clue what the date is. They know it’s spring because they can sense the increasing temperatures and longer days, which prompts them to start growing and blooming.

In the U.S., we celebrate spring on the vernal equinox, but other parts of the world base the seasons on the lunar calendar. In Japan, the people take their cue from the flowers and don’t recognize the start of spring until the cherry blossoms, their national flower, have begun to bloom.

It is created using some of the most popular flowers in the industry right now such as Free Spirit Roses, green and blue Hydrangea, premium greenery in a hobnail glass vessel.

When Spring Flowers Start to Bloom

The very first flowers to bloom come out well before spring and bloom in the winter — even in cold climates! Flowers like crocuses and snowdrops push their way through the snow to sometimes bloom in late January or early February.

Most early spring bloomers like daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips wait until the end of March or beginning of April. Late bloomers like lilacs, peonies, roses, and daisies don’t bloom until the end of spring in May and June.

Our Favorite Spring Flowers for the Home

So many beautiful flowers blossom in spring that it’s tough to choose just a few favorites. The following made our list of favorite flowers for the home, thanks to their dazzling looks, sweet fragrances, and special symbolic meanings.

Pink Tulips

Tulips

1. Tulips

In our opinion, tulips have to be at the top of this list. Whether in a garden, in a container, or a freshly cut bouquet, tulips are simply stunning in spring! They bloom in an endless number of varieties, including all the bright colors of the season. Tulips generally represent love, but different colors have different connotations. For example, white tulips are for forgiveness, and yellow tulips symbolize happy thoughts.

Yellow Daffodils

Daffodils

2. Daffodils

Daffodils bloom early in the season, and their trumpet-shaped noses in sunny yellow, orange, and white are welcome sights after winter. These flowers are the most typical of spring, as they also represent renewal, new beginnings, and rebirth.

Daisies

Daisies

3. Daisies

Daisies don’t bloom until late spring. Their white petals and bright-yellow centers have the effortless beauty of a wild meadow. They’re perfect for celebrating Mother’s Day because they symbolize childbirth and motherhood.

Ranunculus

Ranunculus

4. Ranunculus

These whimsical wonders have endlessly unwinding layers of delicate petals, and they bloom in just about every color, shade, and tint you can imagine. Representing charm and attractiveness, they’re lovely in just about any bouquet.

Peonies

Peonies

5. Peonies

These late-bloomers don’t unfurl their ruffled blossoms until it’s nearly summer, which might be why they sometimes represent bashfulness. Peonies, in all their blushing glory, are also perfect for weddings because they symbolize happy marriage, honor, prosperity, good fortune, and romance.

Freesia

6. Freesia

Freesias, the flowers of friendship, are perhaps more recognized for their signature scent than they are for their looks, but they are stunning blossoms. A single stem supports up to a dozen freesia flowers, and just one or two will perfume a whole room.

Azaleas

7. Azaleas

This flowering shrub, with its delicate blooms in shades of red, pink, and white, symbolizes femininity. They’re lovely to grow in containers or the garden, and they’re also a popular choice of blossom in springtime floral designs.
