Fun Facts about Spring Flowers

This year, spring officially begins on March 19th, the vernal equinox, but flowers don’t have any clue what the date is. They know it’s spring because they can sense the increasing temperatures and longer days, which prompts them to start growing and blooming.

In the U.S., we celebrate spring on the vernal equinox, but other parts of the world base the seasons on the lunar calendar. In Japan, the people take their cue from the flowers and don’t recognize the start of spring until the cherry blossoms, their national flower, have begun to bloom.

When Spring Flowers Start to Bloom

The very first flowers to bloom come out well before spring and bloom in the winter — even in cold climates! Flowers like crocuses and snowdrops push their way through the snow to sometimes bloom in late January or early February.

Most early spring bloomers like daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips wait until the end of March or beginning of April. Late bloomers like lilacs, peonies, roses, and daisies don’t bloom until the end of spring in May and June.
