Did you know? Fourth of July celebrations began as soon as the Declaration of Independence was signed, but the festivities remained relatively low-key for many years. Only after the War of 1812 did Independence Day events become more widespread. Here are some more fun facts about the Declaration of Independence for you to share around the barbecue this holiday:

• Of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence, 13 were under the age of 35.
• One signer (Richard Stockton) later recanted while imprisoned by the British.
• Eight of the signers were born not in America, but in England or Ireland.
• The oldest signer was Benjamin Franklin and the first signature was John Hancock. ( no wonder he took a prominent position!)
• The Declaration of Independence was actually completed on July 2, 1776, but was not approved by Congress until July 4, 1776.
